If you are a beginner just getting started with calligraphy, then the Rice Grid Mao Bian Paper is the perfect paper for you. Made of bamboo, the paper has a rice grid printed on it that will aid in the learning and practicing of many different script styles.

And there are three different grid sizes to choose from. From the smaller 2.6 in x 2.6 in squares to the medium 3.8 inch x 3.8 in to the larger 5.4 in x 5.4 in, you will be able to pick the best size for the script you are working with, and you may want to get a few different sizes so you can work with a variety of styles. The grid patterns offer a guide for where to position the brush strokes.

This paper is handmade, and has a slightly yellow color and a somewhat rough texture. Since it its unprocessed, it is extremely soft and very absorbent. Being unprocessed, the paper hasn’t had any chemicals added to decrease absorbency, which makes it perfect for calligraphy.

Since calligraphy relies on the proportion of water to ink to determine how the brush strokes appear on the paper, the absorbent paper allows the artist to work easily to create the art they desire.

The Rice Grid Mao Bian Paper is produced in Sichuan (Si Chuan) province, which is in central China. This region is where most bamboo is grown in the country, and is called Home of the Bamboo. This paper is made from the pulp of the young bamboo that has just sprouted. Interestingly, the paper still contains a light fragrance of the bamboo.

Though the paper is perfect for beginners, it should not scare away any more advance artists, either. It is a perfect paper for anyone needing practice and perfect scripts they are familiar with, or to work on learning a new style. Whatever your situation, you are sure to find the Rice Grid Mao Bian Paper useful.
