Lulu’s Water Paper Book is a series of books designed to help beginners and advanced artists alike learn and practice calligraphy. Each book features an ancient and famous note in a specific style for you to imitate that will allow you to easily and quickly learn calligraphy. Best of all, every book in this series is made of Magic Water Paper, which uses water instead of ink. The marks you make on this material will disappear about two minutes after you have drawn on it. At that point, you can start over again – it is endless practice. Furthermore, this product has the added bonus of being environmentally friendly!

This note, Xuan Mi Ta Bei, was written by Liu Gongquan (778 A.D. – 865 A.D.) in Kai Shu script style. He was very smart and well educated, and learned calligraphy and Sumi-E from his older brother when he was very young. By the time he was 24-years-old, he was publishing political opinions due to his facination with history. A famous story goes that one time he was once asked by the emperor how he wrote such excellent calligraphy, and he replied that, “The brush will be held upright if the heart is upright. And if the brush can be held upright, you already manage all the rules.” The emporer took the subtle meaning in this message and was inspired to govern his country in a more decent and upstanding way.
