The Versatile is no ordinary paper. Handmade from the bark of the Qingtan Tree (Pteroceltis tatarinowii), as well as other ingredients, there are more than 18 steps in the production process.
It is an unprocessed, unsized Xuan paper with good absorbency and softness, making it ideal for both calligraphy writing and sumi-e painting. Interestingly, instead of aging and looking worse as time passes, this paper loses its original roughness as it gets older. Here at the Asian Brushpainter, we recommend our customers stock up on some Versatile paper to use later, after it becomes smoother and easier to work with as well as more visually appealing - than it is in its original form.
Additionally, this paper also is great for Encaustics, which is the art of painting with hot beeswax that has color pigments added to it. Unlike sumi-e or fineline painting, when working with Encaustics, the thinner the paper is, the more luminescent the final product eventually will be.
