The Tribute to the Emperor is a brush of such high quality that instead of being just a tribute to the Emperor, it could also be given as a gift to be used by the Emperor.

The quality is gained from the versatility provided by this mixed hair brush, which is 70% weasel hair and 30% goat hair. On the inside, the weasel hair provides a formidable elasticity and strength, while the goat hair surrounding the outside makes the brush both soft and flexible.

With these qualities in mind, the brush, with its large tip, is not only great for calligraphy, but also for sumi-e painting.

Since the Chinese characters Lang Hao can mean either wolf or weasel hair, many artists are misled into thinking their brush is actual wolf hair (which do exist but are rare and expensive). Because of the huge quality differences in the weasel hair family, here at The Chinese Calligraphist, we use the term wolf hair to denote high quality weasel hair, and use weasel hair to label more basic weasel hair brushes.

Tribute to the Emperor definitely falls into the former category, as its weasel hair is produced in the Northeast region of China, long known for producing the best weasel hair in the country.
