The Mustard Seed Garden-Insect and Flower Painting focuses on insects and flowers, and is divided into two separate parts. The first part focuses on sketches of individual insects and flowers, which will allow the artist to learn how to paint the smallest details of each of these subjects. The second portion of the book, however, features water-colored paintings that combine both insects and flowers.

This second section is great because it provides examples on not only how to draw the insects and flowers, but also how to structure and color your paintings. Additionally, this section can be used for study and inspiration for years to come. Known in Chinese as Jieziyuan Huazhuan, which translates to “Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden,” Jieziyuan was a province in eastern China at the time the book was first written, and it was also known as the Mustard Seed Garden. Today, the province is called Zhejiang Province.

Reportedly first published in 1679, the book was based on paintings and techniques of previous masters, and contemporary painters were commissioned to work on the book, as well. Since that time, the work has been added to and gone through many different printings as it continues to stand as one of the best sources for those interested in learning Chinese painting from the past masters.
