The Moving the Mountain Brush Rest is a beautifully carved wooden brush rest that takes its name from a famous story called Yu Gong Yi Shan, which means the foolish old man who removed the mountains.

It is said that long ago, there two giant mountains in front of an old man’s house that blocked him from coming or going, so the man decided he would tear them down. The man’s neighbor told him he was foolish because he was old and weak and would never be able to move the mountains. The old man replied that he had sons and they had sons, and he would have an endless line of descendants who could continuously work to level the mountains, while the mountains would never grow higher. The fiercely determined spirit of the old man moved the immortals to send down immortals to move the mountains away.

This saying implies that we should remain perseverant, diligent and fearless in the face of difficulty. The Moving the Mountain Brush Rest is a great way to remind you to persevere while you are working at your art, even during difficult times.
