Decorative Elements: Hand carved leaping carp

There is a story that has been told for centuries in China about determined carp. It is said that long ago, there was a dam on the Yellow River called Dragon Gate. This dam was hundreds of miles tall, and the water running through it was so fierce that no fish swimming upstream could jump over the dam to continue their journey.

However, there was a legend that any fish that was able to jump over the dam would in fact become a dragon. So each year when Spring arrived, many carp would swim to the dam to try and jump over the gate to become dragons, and eventually some were finally able to make it.

The story is told to children to illustrate why it is important to always study hard and continuously try and become a better person.

This is one reason the carp has become so revered in Chinese culture, and the Leaping Over the Dragon Gate Brush Rest is a perfect accessory piece for you studio. Intricately carved and stained a dark red, it is a beautiful piece to use as a brush rest.
