JIN BU HAN - Practice Ink Stick

Pine Soot Practicing Ink Stick for Calligraphy Writing, Sumi-e and Fineline Painting. Standard all-rounder ink stick mostly for practicing purposes producing a matt-black finish.

The Jin Bu Huan is made of pine soot, which produces a matte finish (as opposed to the glossy finish produced by ink sticks made of oil soot). This ink typically is used for secondary subjects in paintings, so they do not draw attention from the main focal point of the work.

On the side of this stick is written Jin Bu Huan, the stick manufacturer's name in Chinese. This name literally translates to "cannot be traded with gold." Traditionally, this is used to describe the return of a son who has previously been on the wrong track.

Ink sticks are the traditional method of producing ink that has been used by Chinese artists for over 2,000 years. The sticks are ground against an ink slab and then the resulting powder is mixed with water to produce the ink. The amount of water used determines the consistency of the ink.
