The Four Gentlemen are four plants that are traditionally used in Chinese and Japanese paintings: plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. Each is seen to represent noble characteristics that artists seek for themselves, and each of the ink sticks in the Four Gentlemen Ink Set has one of these plants printed on them.

Every stick in the set is made of oil soot, which is the soot produced from animal oil and produces a warm and shiny black ink effect. Ink sticks have long been decorated, and have come to be known as artworks themselves. The carvings of the traditional plants on these achieve this effect and will make a great decoration for you studio. On the back of each stick, the family name of the maker ink stick manufactory is carved.

Ink sticks have been used for thousands of years by Chinese artists. They are ground on an ink slab to produce a powder and then water is added to that powder to create the ink. Artists today like this method because they can control the consistency of the ink.
