Immediately striking about Waves of the Sea is surface that resembles the surface of a smooth marble. This was created through a method called Marbling, which gives a similar yet always distinctive look to many kinds of marbled paper. Introduced by Su Yijian (957 - 995) with help from Wen Fang Si Pu, the process has been popular since.

Waves of the Sea is a semi-processed Xuan paper, meaning it has chemical called alum added to prevent water absorbency. The amount of absorbency left depends on the amount of alum added, and this paper has an intermediate absorbency level. With the added bonus that it is a one-ply paper, it is perfect to use for calligraphy.

Some artists also like to use this paper for Sumi-e, as the unique pattern will lend a distinctive look to paintings not found in any other paper.
